Whether you are an individual seeking to insure a single item or a collection, a law firm needing an appraisal for a divorce settlement, an executor seeking to settle an estate, an attorney needing a expert witness, someone needing an appraisal for an insurance claim, or a donor needing an appraisal for a gift or a charitable donation, you need to find a professional personal property appraiser.
WHAT IS AN APPRAISAL? Appraising is simply a process of determining a value for an item or group of items. It is not an exact science, but rather an informed opinion based on the research, evidence, and experience. WHAT IS THE APPRAISER'S RESPONSIBILITY? To provide valuation while including such factors as checking authenticity or authorship, or the validity of damage claims. To strive to prepare accurate appraisals that are supported by evidences. Appraisals can never be 100% accurate but are rather an informed opinion. As appraisers they are dealing with estimates and opinions. Valuations are judgments, not measurements. They strive to gather significant and accurate date, analyze it properly and achieve a maximum degree of accuracy. WHAT IS "PERSONAL PROPERTY?" Personal property can include almost anything other than real estate. This would include antiques, collectibles, furniture, household items, tools, artwork, industrial equipment, business inventory, etc. Appraisers examine identifiable portable and tangible objects that are considered by the general public as being “personal” to determine the fair market or replacement value. Appraisers should be firmly committed, when reporting the results of the personal property appraisal, to always communicate each analysis, opinion, and conclusion in a manner that is understandable and founded on recognized methods and techniques that are necessary to produce a credible appraisal. HOW TO FIND AN APPRAISER There are many antique dealers who consider themself qualified to be an appraiser, and some of them actually are, but you would be best served to find someone who is a certified appraiser. There are several reputable appraisal organizations who train, test, and certifiy their members as certified appraisers. They include The International Society of Appraisers (I.S.A.), the American Society of Appriasers (A.S.A.), and the Certified Appraisers Guild of America (C.A.G.A.).
